James Sisnett celebrated his 111th birthday today and was the toast of a luncheon hosted by the National Committee on Ageing.
He was surrounded by four generations of his family including eight of his 11 children, some of his 25 grandchildren and 15 great grands, politicians, diplomats, priests and a host of other guests.
Sisnett, who now lives at Ocean View Nursing Home at Graeme Hall, Christ Church, is a former resident of Ellerton St George.
During today’s function, guests viewed a short documentary on Sisnett’s life, detailing his boyhood, his years of toil in Barbados’ sugar industry, and conditions in Barbados in the early part of the century which he has outlived.
The supercentenarian, still an active worshipper at St Luke’s Anglican Church, is in “excellent health” according to his care-givers.
There was a congratulatory message from Governor General Sir Clifford Husbands which was read by master of ceremonies Professor Henry Fraser.(GC)
