How do you define your personal style?
My personal style is geared to the Caribbean with European and classic influences, often with a little Greek mythology added for good measure. Mixing up several concepts can produce a successful overall statement.
Do you find that you follow fashion trends or do you play by your own rules?
I definitely don’t follow latest trends, I usually do my own thing. For instance, I lived in a rural area in Germany and created my own designs and had them made by a local dressmaker who I have to say was very competent and knew what I was trying to achieve. Having said that, as a matter of interest I am always open to influences, particularly from the international designers.
Has your fashion sense changed over the years or has it remained the same?
It is difficult not to change one’s taste with the passing of time, but I would like to think although my style has changed over time, and indeed other priorities that involve my lifestyle, both have to be dovetailed into each other so that my style speaks for itself. The glamorous touch is always attached.
Are there any colours that you tend to shy away from and if so, why?
I can honestly say I don’t have a particular colour hangup; it would come down to how I feel on the day. Being Bajan, I can say that colour is more available here via the culture of the Caribbean. Let’s face it, culture influences colour throughout the world’s nations.
As a child, were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?
As a child I was always interested in clothes. I was the only girl with three brothers until I was about 12 years old. My mother was a seamstress, so she made all our clothes. Whenever I had to try on my dress, there was always a sadness in my heart because I thought there was something more that could be added to make the dress look more stylish. My very first pay cheque was spent on actually having a collection of clothes that complement my style. I went on to be a successful fashion model at the age of eighteen. How does your day-to-day life factor into your wardrobe choices? As a personal trainer, most of the day I am forced to wear fitness attire. My wardrobe consist of many pieces that can be mixed-and-matched. There are the unbelievable odd times when I just don’t know what to wear although there are enough choices. Eventually when I make my choice, it boils down to what feels comfortable at the time but still looks fabulous
Are there any designers you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?
I appreciate most of the top designers, but I like to wear Pauline Bellamy – there’s always a personal touch to her finishes – and Simon Foster [Simon & Peter designs]. His asymmetric hemline and frills are always a winner with me.
