“Take care of your body. Do not let anyone destroy it, and you will live long,” advises Barbados’ latest centenarian Jerome Best.
He yesterday joined the elite club of 30-plus centenarians in Barbados, being one of the few men who have reached the milestone.
Congratulations poured in from family, friends and well-wishers, and some took time out yesterday morning to celebrate with him. As he relaxed in the living room of his only daughter Gwendolyn Bowen’s Bridge Gap, Black Rock, St Michael home, Best shared a drink with Governor General Sir Clifford Husbands, and reminisced on his younger days when he worked as a carpenter.
Best, who lives alone in Goodland, St Michael, said: “I feel really good to reach 100, but I did not expect to reach 2011. I remember when I was 18, 19 years, and I was wondering if I would ever get to 30. And now I have long gone past that several times,” he said with a chuckle. (LK)
