Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy says Barbados is a leader in tourism, not a follower.
He had this message for the Opposition in the House of Assembly yesterday.
Sealy said the Barbados Labour Party was suggesting which countries Barbados should emulate in the quest to improve tourism, but some of these countries were watching Barbados. He said Barbados’ status as a leader was recently illustrated in the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report produced by the World Economic Forum.
Barbados ranks third in the Americas, behind the United States and Canada, and above all other Caribbean and Latin American countries. The island’s overall ranking has improved fromnumber 30 in 2009 to 28 in this year’s report.
The global survey of 139 countries, the most competitive nations in travel and tourism, ranked Switzerland number one.
Sealy spoke about the survey when the House of Assembly continued debate on the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure for 2011-2012.
