Australia’s long reign as World Cup cricket champions is over.
The holders of the game’s most prestigious prize since 1999 crashed out of the 2011 World Cup after losing their quarter-final showdown with India by five wickets yesterday.
Yuvraj Singh, who collected his fourth Man of the Match award in the tournament, guided the co-hosts to a target of 261 with 14 balls to spare with an unbeaten 57 that followed his two wickets.
A crowd of about 48 000 at Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad erupted in wild celebrations when India won the match to set up a semi-final duel with Pakistan.
