AN EARLY morning walk turned tragic for a St Philip mother of two yesterday.
Mavis Ward, of Sargeant’s Park, Foul Bay, St Philip, died on the spot after being involved in a collision with a car along Kirtons Main Road in the same parish.
The vehicle was driven by Jabari Clarke, 30, of Rices, St Philip, who appeared to escape unhurt.
The 38-year-old Ward, a housekeeper at Crane Hotel, who used to take regular morning walks, had only resumed the exercise routine last Wednesday after having stopped for a while
.Police relations officer Inspector David Welch said lawmen received a call after 5:20 a.m. alerting them to the incident.
Ward’s sister Michelle Drakes, who shared the family home with Mavis’ 12-year-old daughter Moriah Ward, had the grim task of identifying the body.
“Shortly after 9 a.m., the police came to the house and asked me to assist with identifying a body, but I have no further details about what happened or who did it,” Drakes told the SUNDAY SUN hours after the accident.
She recalled her sister as being very open-hearted, caring, funny and loud, but compassionate.
“I am . . . just trying to come to grips with the news,” she added.
Moriah said she and her mother were “very close” and always had fun together.
Efforts to contact Mavis’ 24-year-old son Antony Durant, who is in the British Army, were not successful.
Her husband of 12 years Michael Ward said he was putting on his shoes to leave the house when he received the call just after 9 a.m.
“The feeling is neutral, it is up and down. We were separated but we communicated well. I last spoke to her on Thursday,” he said, shaking his head.
Other relatives are expected to arrive from St Vincent, where Mavis was born, by tomorrow to look after funeral arrangements.
