Walter Maloney has been returned as president of this island’s largest public sector trade union.
He defeated three opponents in yesterday’s poll of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) in what was a contest filled with much negative comments about his stewardship.
His challengers for the presidency were: Manasseh King, Clifton Forde and Danny Gill.
Maloney will now be serving his fourth consecutive term as NUPW president.
A stalwart of the union, Cedric Murrell, who is also president of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations (CTUSAB), has been elected first vice-president with the other members of the executive voted in yesterday being: Margo Bannister, second vice-president, Marlene Jones, third vice-president; Pamela Humphrey, treasuer; and Anne Marie Burke as deputy treasurer.
Maloney said late last night after the count: “I’m pleased with the outcome, especially given all the negativity, and [I’m] especially happy with the turnout and support from the membership.”
