Guineas kicks off triple crown

The quest to find another triple crown winner starts tomorrow at the Garrison Savannah.
That’s when the curtain comes down on the Barbados Turf Club’s first racing season with the staging of the Barbados Guineas Race Day which features eight races and begins at 1:30 pm.
The highlight of this race day is that it starts the journey to find another triple crown winner to follow in the footsteps of the Richard Edwards-owned Zouk in 2006 and the Joseph brothers-owned Areyoutalkintome in 2009.
That opportunity beckons with the 12 horses that will go to post for the 61st running of the Barbados Guineas, which is race seven on the day’s card.
The Coo Bird Handicap is sure to be one of the races on the card that will create quite a stir. This event for three-year-olds and older horses rated 118-140 is also open to horses rated 117 and below over 1 570 metres.
Elias Haloute and Sir Charles Williams-owned Apostle will take the top weight of 135 pounds. Unplaced in this year’s Sandy Lane Gold Cup, the much loved gelding will not findthis a friendly affair as his nemesis, Bouncebak, is also entered.
The Lord Michael Taylor-owned mare is in good form, having recorded two victories from her three comeback starts. Bouncebak dismissed the top rated horses 0-140 in this year’s Coolmore Home Of Champions Stakes And Trophy over 1 800 metres and then won the ninth Tanglewood Stakes And Trophy over 2 000 metres. She is handicapped at 118 pounds and this will probably be her sternest test.
Melrose and Clifton racing-owned Rocamadour showed unknown versatility when he easily defeated the top-rated sprinters 115-140 last race day in the Condominiums At Palm Beach Trophy Handicap over 1 100 metres.
Unfazed by the weight of 131 pounds on that occasion, an additional two pounds here should hardly hinder his chances of a repeat victory.
Another one that the public might want to keep their eyes on is the Aysha Syndicate-owned Charge It. He goes here with 118 pounds and was a creditable fourth in the just concluded Sandy Lane Gold Cup.
An attention grabber is that of the Pepperpot Handicap for three-year-olds over 1 570 metres.
Lord Michael Taylor-owned Daga has dominated this company since recording her maiden victory in the Diamond International Mont Blanc Doue  Condition Race over 1 570 metres.
She will shoulder the top weight of 130 pounds, while seeking to continue her winning streak.
Bill Hayley and the Comics-owned Byhookorbycreek was an impressive winner of the Bajan Blue Restaurant Trophy Handicap for horses rated 93-115 over 1 800 metres under the penny stamp of 108 pounds. He will now take an additional 18 pounds and must dig deeper to repeat that success.
