WASHINGTON, – The United States today gave unreserved support to the President-elect of Haiti, Michel Martelly, as he indicated that his new vision for the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country would be to implement “useful and necessary reforms”.
Martelly, who is on a brief visit to Washington, was congratulated by US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton for his landslide victory in the March 20 presidential elections in the impoverished CARICOM nation.
“I’m very encouraged by the campaign that Mr Martelly ran, his emphasis on the people and their needs, his willingness to be very clear on what he hoped to achieve on their behalf,” Clinton said.
“We are behind him, we have a great deal of enthusiasm…. The people of Haiti may have a long road ahead of them, but as they walk it the United States will be with you all the way.”
Martelly, who takes over from President Rene Preval on May 14, said he would dedicate his first six months in office to tackling the cholera epidemic which has been sweeping the country, getting those still living in tent cities into permanent accommodation and boosting agricultural production.
