Remembering Provencal

Barbadians at home and abroad expressed their condolences at the passing of Barbados music icon Doris Provencal.
Provencal, one of Barbados’ outstanding vocal coaches and choir directors died yesterday. She suffered from congenital heart failure and was under doctor’s care for the past two years.
Nation online readers paid tribute to Provencal, who relocated to Barbados from Montreal, Canada in 1952 with her Barbadian husband John Kirton.

Zora Neale: “I know that she is singing with the angels. Sincerest condolences.”
Marlyn Ally: “An excellent singing teacher. I have many fond memories of her class at St Gabriel’s School.
Glenory Valantine Rice: “Expressions of sadness and heartfelt condolences are extended to the family of Doris Provencal. …  I can recall her warm counsel during my days at the then Barbados Rediffusion. Rest in peace.
Paula Burnett: “Miss Kirton as she was called at Foundation in the very early ’70’s was an excellent music teacher. I can still remember some of the hymns and songs that she taught us then. Inspiration. May her soul rest in peace and deepest condolences to her family.”
