Paco Moss pulled off an upset on a night of few surprises as Mount Gay Bayswater defeated table leaders Barbados Light & Power (BL&P) when the Robert Earle Division One table tennis club championships continued at the Table Tennis Centre, Nursery Drive, St Michael, last Thursday night.
Moss, who recently returned from the Latin American Championships and Pan American qualifiers in Mexico, where he was manager of the Barbados team, beat Abbie Clarke 11-8, 5-11, 11-6, 2-11, 18-16.
Moss played as though inspired by the championships he recently witnessed to put his side up 2-0 after Kevin Farley beat Shane Norville in straight games 11-9, 11-8, 11-2. Denis France completed the 3-0 shutout by overcoming national women’s player Ann Reid 5-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-2.
Mark Dowell, another member of the Barbados team under the management of Moss, was in terrific form as he pulled off two wins to help Scouters down the Barbados Union of Teachers 3-0. Â
Both teams were short of players and as a result the third set on the scoresheet wasn’t played. Dowell started by beating David Harris 11-3, 12-10, 11-4 and ended with a 3-1 win over Romel Carter who had earlier lost to Bryan Matthews by a similar score.
Sports & Games Spinners won by default from struggling Rising Sun, while in the only other match, Raiders beat Fast Loopers. Â
Aaron Barker, another member of the men’s team that competed in Mexico, beat Courtney Springer 12-10, 11-7, 11-2. Trevor Farley toppled Curt Moore 11-3, 11-8, 13-11, while Rashad King stopped Rawle Husbands 5-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-9.(PH)
