For mortician Jewell Leacock, less is always more
How would you define your personal style?
It usually depends on my mood and the occasion, but it’s more or less cool and not overdone. Less is always more.
Do you find that you follow fashion trends or do you play by your own rules?
I play by my own rules, period. I’m not a slave to fashion trends or patterns. I still have outfits in my wardrobe from aeons ago because they won’t go out of style. I like what I like.
Has your fashion sense changed over the years or has it remained the same?
I’d say it has grown as I have. I used to wear army pants and Timberlands when I was 21. I wouldn’t really do that now. I also used to wear a lot of neutral colours but now I like to experiment with bright, vibrant colours.
Are there any colours that you tend to shy away from and if so, why?
Nope. I love all colours. Even dull colours can have their time to shine when accentuated with the right accessories.
As a child, were you always into clothes or did you grow into your fashion sense?
I was a little “tomboyish” as a little girl and I don’t remember being fussy about clothes but I’d say that by the time I was an experienced teenager, my fashion foundation was set and it grew from there to now and is still growing.
How does your day-to-day life factor into your wardrobe choices?
It really depends on how good I feel when I wake up. Some days I’ll go all out and dress to impress, others may be more relaxed and super casual. I go with the flow but as long as I feel good when I bounce through the door, I’m groovy.
Are there any designers you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?
I’m not really into designers, but there are a few young Barbadian ladies who are doing big things – Calori and Shannon Ashley have been producing some exceptionally impressive designs – but normally, no. It doesn’t have to be a brand name but it could be. As long as it appeals to me and makes me stop and look at the price or turn my head, then it gets the nod.
If you could choose one colour that should be in every wardrobe, what would it be and why?
White would be my colour of choice. It’s vibrant yet calming and can be used as a canvas for just about any other colour or accessory.
Where do you like to shop?
I find quite a few nifty and hot-to-trot outfits in Barbados but I do most of my shopping overseas.
