DEAR CHRISTINE – To marry or not to marry

Share post:

Dear Christine,
My two brothers and one sister are all overseas. I am the one at home with my mother and grandmother, along with a younger sister who is just out of school.
A few months ago, I met a man who visits his parents in Barbados on a regular basis. He has asked me to marry him. We are both in our 30s.
My mother, who is quite strong, seems to be trying to discourage me. She makes remarks such as: “What you know about him in Canada? I alone won’t be able to look after the house and the old lady.”
My grandmother on the other hand is encouraging me: “Go, child.”
I love my family, and I also love this man. Would I be wrong to leave?

Dear Miss Anxious,
There is no reason why you should not marry this man and make a life for yourself.
I imagine that you’ve been taking on a lot of the responsibilities in the home that would normally have fallen on your mother, and she is not happy about this.
You may be a nice person to have around the house, and they will miss you, but you’ve got to live your life. Do as your grandmother says. Leave and cleave!
Just remember to stay in touch with them when you do.
– CHRISTINE
