DOROTHY BRADSHAW is afraid.
Bradshaw (not real name) is one of the thousands of CLICO policyholders waiting to get their money.
She fears that time will run out before she sees a cent of the $270 000 owed to her from five policies.
“I gine die before I get de cheques,” she said matter-of-factly.
She takes little comfort from the fact that the company delivered in the past. A sixth policy to the tune of $125 000 was paid off in two instalments last year.
The retired 75-year-old woman cares for her ill husband, who is 82, and a 12-year-old granddaughter. She has been raising the child ever since her son died tragically in an accident.
She runs the household on the pension cheques she and her husband receive. The additional monthly payment for $1 168 from CLICO for the interest on the $200 000 policy, which is the largest of the remaining five, was stopped in March with no warning.
“Lester [Brathwaite, the agent from CLICO] asked me if I wanted it yearly, half-yearly quarterly or monthly. Being I’m a pensioner, I need it monthly ’cause I have to pay maid, light, water, telephone – none of us don’t work,” she explained.
It has been almost five months since she should have received her money from CLICO, but she is still waiting.
