Sulieman Benn has no problem standing for the Trinidad and Tobago national anthem.
Just not when it’s being played at the National Stadium in Barbados, and the two countries are minutes away from another football encounter.
The lanky former West Indies spinner, always in the news, was again yesterday when Trinidadian sports journalist Ian Prescott called him out for not standing for the playing of the Trinidadian anthem before Tuesday evening’s World Cup qualifier in Barbados.
“People should know me better than that. I have no problem with Trinidad, Trinidadians, or the Trinidad anthem in the least,” Benn said in an exclusive interview with the DAILY NATION yesterday.
“What people do know about me is how competitive I am. That’s all I was doing. It’s in my nature to be competitive. This was all about the sport, and me being patriotic to the footballers of Barbados.
“But if people do think I should not have done it, or were offended by my actions, then for that I apologize,” Benn said yesterday.
