The youth of Barbados had their say on the issues, expressing themselves passionately through dance, drama, song and spoken word, and the audience at the Plantation Garden Theatre last Saturday night heard every word.
Youth Talk featured performances by young people that centred on specific themes such as identity, HIV/AIDS, trans-generational issues, women’s issues, single parenting and block culture/drugs.
Among the performers were Joshua Gay, Karlos Cobham, Nikita Brown, Pearls Dance Academy, Jahari Taitt, Marcus King, Miss Barbados World 2011 Taisha Carrington, Sammy G, the dancers of Trident Productions, Nicolette Williams and Azman.
Gay graced the stage with his piano and singing skills to perform John Legend’s If You’re Out There. Next up was Brown, who superbly sang Superwoman by Alicia Keys. Both Pearls Dance Academy and Trident Productions gave a passionate and fabulous performance of their dances Reaching For The Dream and Big Spender, respectively.
Young Cobham did double duty in entertaining the audience with both his skills as an MC and captivating performances of his songs Big Life and Transcend.
The highlight of the night was the Fashion Challenge.
Six designers had 45 minutes to complete a garment using the red fabric provided without the use of a sewing machine.
The audience, filled with both the young and young at heart – including Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports Stephen Lashley – thoroughly enjoyed the refreshing experience that Youth Talk turned out to be.
The youth should take a bow because the night was a rousing success.
