President of the Barbados Alzheimer’s Association, Pamelia Brerton, is calling for a dedicated facility to offer day care services to those with Alzheimer’s disease.
Speaking to the DAILY NATION yesterday after a church service marking the beginning of their week of activities at St George Parish Church, Brerton said it took special training to take care of those afflicted with that disease.
“It is one thing to take [care] of an elderly person but another to take care of an elderly person with Alzheimer’s. I think a proper facility is the problem, such as a day care for older people with Alzheimer’s, where someone can drop their loved one for a few hours,” she said.
However, Brerton said another problem was the lack of personnel trained in how to deal with Alzheimer’s patients in the first place.
