Deacons rebound

RBC/RBTT Deacons rebounded from their mauling by Chargers to easily defeat the BNB Juniors in a rare Friday night of Cooperators General Insurance Senior Volleyball knockout action at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
Senior volleyball is hardly ever played on a Friday night but the association is in a battle to stay on course to stage the finals on October 2, thus a cancelled fixture from September 17 was played.
Seldom placing a “big six” on court, Deacons were still too potent for the Juniors who lost 21-25, 8-25, 14-25, to finish 0/6 at the bottom of the pack in the preliminaries.
Deacons ended 5/1, the same record as defending champions Progressive, but Progressive have 26 points to Deacons’ 25.
Tomorrow Chargers who are 4/1 with 21 points will meet the unfancied O-Aces in a game which Chargers should win to finish on 26 points but with a better set-point quotient than Progressive.
That would give Chargers the top spot and leave Deacons and Progressive battling in the semi-finals. Chargers will most likely meet Sunpower Foundation United.
On Friday night Chargers easily disposed of Foundation 25-16, 25-20, 25-14, with Romel Agard, who deserted Foundation this season, showing little sympathy for his former club.
The only significant incident of the match was youngster Jabarry Goodridge turning out for Foundation after competing for the Juniors to set the dubious record of being defeated 6-0 in senior volleyball on the same night.
The women’s matches crept to predictable endings with second-placed Warrens beating Plus The Club 25-19, 25-14, 25-15.
Deacons beat Carefree Toners 25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16. Deacons and Warrens will clash in the semis, while defending champions Chargers must wait out the game between Warrens and Rockets to see who will advance as the fourth-placed team.
Last year’s losing finalists Rockets need to defeat Warrens to pip the Toners for that final spot and a semi-finals battle with the Chargers.
