OPPOSITION?LEADER Owen Arthur is initiating a parliamentary investigation into Government’s decision to spend tens of millions of dollars on a second design for the long-mooted Bridgetown Pierhead Marina project.
He has determined that the parliamentary committee, which has oversight of public expenditure and Government contracts, would look into the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) administration’s spending of over $40 million more for SMI Infrastructure Solutions to carry out design and other work, even though plans for the marina had already been completed.
“I have written to the Clerk of Parliament to request that meetings of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) be convened to investigate a number of things, but especially this, because this is one for which we need full investigation and the matter fully has to be explained,” he said in an interview with the SUNDAY SUN yesterday.
Arthur, who is Leader of the Opposition and chairs the PAC, said he has since been informed that meetings have been scheduled to start mid-month. (DP)
