A $35 MILLION EASE on electricity bills, jail time for lawbreakers in the CLICO debacle, and a range of tax concessions for the tough economic times.
These were among proposals made by political leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), Owen Arthur, as the Bees concluded their 73rd annual conference at the Grantley Adams Memorial School in St Joseph yesterday.
In a two-hour presentation to more than 500 party members and supporters, the former Prime Minister also called for an incomes policy that would mean more money for “the vulnerable at the bottom” of the pay scale, and the removal of immigration and other restrictions to business he said were costing Barbados millions of dollars in foreign investment and jobs.
Arthur suggested that the Barbados National Oil Company group, with a profit of more than $50 million at March, 2010, and profits expected to exceed $60 million last March, help cushion electricity bills. (TY)
