‘Bling style taking over’

THE ATTRACTION to “bling and glitzy lifestyles” is largely responsible for the moral decay in Barbados, suggests Steve Blackett, Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development.
At the launch of DanceFest 2011 over the weekend at his ministry in Warrens, St Michael, Blackett said there had been “repeated calls at all levels of society for entertainment for our youth that promotes positive values, socially acceptable behaviour and strength of character, and which does not place emphasis on lewdness and inappropriate behaviours”.
“The popular music culture and the adoption of bling and glitzy lifestyles have largely been responsible for the increase in social decay in our communities. However, we at the ministry . . . have become increasingly aware that there is potential for us to turn this around through the medium of positive music and cultural activities.
“We believe that through popular music we can show and convince young people that there is an alternative lifestyle that is positive, enjoyable and wholesome,” Blackett added.
