A RECORD of close to 200 runners and walkers took part in the annual Long Bay Community 5K which was held last Sunday evening in the parish of St Philip.
Some well-known names excelled in the event with Shani Adams taking the women’s run followed by Sheena Gooding and Jane Evelyn.  The men’s race was captured by Jerome Blackett. Mark Greenidge placed second and Shammel Maynard came third.
The juniors event was an exciting affair with Akeele Blackman pipping Juan Clarke and third placed Anika Blackman.
Shae Nurse ran away with the boys’ event leaving Zayne Deukett to get in second just ahead of Floyd Park.
Over ten special Olympians, still basking in their glory from Greece, took part in the walk with one of their own, Tanya Grosvenor smoking the field.  Second was Phyllis Gill and Patricia Webster came third.
The fleet-footed Rodney Blackman held off Nation staffer Dudley Blackman while Terrerr Shepherd finished third in the men’s walk. Three-year-old Wenai Steele was the youngest female competitor while eight-year-old Amir Blackman was the youngest male.
Former walking great Noel Husbands placed sixth as the oldest male at 61. He finished just before the oldest female, 61-year-old  Betty Murray. (KB)
