MAVIS BECKLES – Evahbody playing football

Share post:

ALL THESE YEARS I come along and hear dat cricket was the national sport, the favourite sport o’ Barbados. But in recent times and fuh the things I see happening, I realize dat things changing rapidly ’bout here.
Look, evahbody, even Mia, playing football, hear?
She got a football competition going on at the National Stadium and it involves all kinds o’ players. Mia like she get tuh like the game o’ football summuch dat she like she even playing political football.
She playing she own style o’ football, boh; one minute she was the captain o’ the team, then the next ya hear, she get drop. She is now a sub and pon the sidelines.
But Mia got evahbody pon the team confuse and bamboozle cause she dribbling the ball from player tuh player and all ovah the field. Up tuh now, nuhbody cahn work out what position she playing.
Some people even saying dat from the way she dribbling the ball, the next team might be looking tuh buy she ovah tuh play against she home boys.
But she ain’t the only body who got a football competition going on, ya know. Duh got another one up in St John; I think it name the David Thompson Classic.
Now this particular one I hear is sponsored by the constituency councils. I ain’t know, but dem constituency councils like dem is political footballs, getting kicked between the ruling team and the opposing one.
But what is interesting tuh me is the name duh give it; wha I cahn remember David Thompson as a sportsman, far less playing dah kinda rough and tumble sport like football. All the stories I heard ’bout him is dat he was more the talker, the debater; I ain’t know ’bout the sportsman part. And another thing is this:?I wonder if some o’ dem footballers playing in Mia competition?
Now Hammie is a star-baller. He has been playing football fuh years but he like he doan stan’ pon nuh losing team fuh too long though. He does tackle pon both sides and if ya doan mind, he could turn around and score pon the very team he playing for.
The other thing is this: it looks like when one team start tuh lose, my boy does put in fuh a transfer in a hurry.
But duh like duh got another game going on wid the Central Bank and the Statistical Service. While one scoring ten points and the other 12, the economic officials say settle the score and call it 11. However ya look at it, we the country still lost the match.
Well, we cahn fuhget the CLICO football match dat look like it would never end. Dat is the longest match in history.
Look, dat match has been going on fuh years now.
Even the international teams like duh getting in pon the action. I hear the Chelsea Club from up in England want tuh start training down here under some hotel group called Harlequin dat is supposed tuh be sponsoring the training group in Barbados.
David Cameron, the Prime Minister o’ England, like he in pon um too; he playing against the whole Commonwealth and telling evahbody tuh play by he rules, otherwise duh ain’t getting in none o’ he divisions.
But let me tell ya, he cahn mess wid the Ghanaian African football star President John Attamills nor the Ugandan president either; not one o’ dem doan intend tuh play dat kinda ball wid he. Dem ain’t Jack Horner and dem ain’t sitting in nuh corner.
But you see Mr Cameron, I hope he remember dat he get on pon dah English team by default; and now he playing dat he is a big maguffy throwing around he weight and threatening tuh withdraw the li’l aid dat England giving out?
I hope he knows dat it could backfire and he could get kick off the team just so. He ain’t playing football; he playing the fool.

Mavis Beckles was born and raised in The Orleans. She has an opinion on everything.
