Scrum battle

On a day when rain created havoc with this island’s king of sport, cricket, rugby officials were all smiles.
Barbados’ minority sport had the day to itself as the Garrison Savannah played host to the North American and Caribbean Rugby Association’s International Sevens Tournament.
And amid the constant showers, fans lapped it all up.
More than 40 matches were played on the two pitches at the historic savannah yesterday, the same spot where British soldiers first played the game when the Queen’s army was stationed there more than 150 years ago.
And those fans are certain to be back again today when the tournament, hosted by Barbados for the first time, climaxes with finals in the men’s and women’s competitions.
Both Barbados teams were in action yesterday, with the men defeating Turks and Caicos, but losing to Jamaica and Martinique.
The women had little luck, losing all four matches they played. (BA)
