The Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP) and the Ministry of Health appear to be on another collision course, this time over a move that could allow teens to see a doctor without their parents’ consent.
President Dr Carlos Chase is strongly opposed to “potentially explosive” legislation that would give legal right to teenagers, from age 16, to seek health care on their own. He has warned that it could have disastrous consequences, particularly as it relates to reproductive health care.
“Will we now have a free for all, with anyone taking underage girls to the doctor to get abortions and treatment for STDs without the parent’s knowledge or consent?
“We are fixing a problem that does not exist, simply following what other nations are doing,” he said in a statement to the WEEKEND NATION yesterday.
