Outside probe call

Lawyers David Comissiong and Andrew Pilgrim are calling for an independent investigation into the death of 30-year-old Curtis Callender in police custody last Thursday.
“Two senior officers from a sister CARICOM nation should be brought to Barbados and put in charge of the police investigation in order to avoid the unhealthy situation of having the Barbados police investigate themselves,” Comissiong suggested yesterday.
He suggested that while the unnatural death was being investigated the police officers who dealt with Callender should be temporarily suspended.
Comissiong contended that such stipulations were needed especially since the deceased man’s relatives had expressed concern of possible wrongdoing while Callender was in police custody.
Pilgrim, who is also president of the Barbados Bar Association, said he supported the call for an independent investigation.
