THE BARBADOS MUSEUM and Historical Society is looking to get more involved in publishing.
Speaking yesterday at the launch of The Journal Of The Barbados Museum & Historical Society Volume LV11 December 2011, chairman of the Publications and Programming Committee, Sir Woodville Marshall, said the Museum had already published two books and was looking to produce at least two or three per year.
By Divine Permission, Migration To Panama and a reprint of Facing the Challenge Of Emancipation are scheduled for 2012.
Sir Woodville said it was likely that his book on place names in Barbados would be published by the Museum as well.
The journal was edited by Dr Karl Watson, who has assumed the responsibility of general editor for all of the Museum’s publications. This is the 15th year Watson has edited the journal.
Watson said the cover photo on the journal was a reflection of Historic Bridgetown, which was recently designated as a World Heritage site. It is a 1695 Samuel Copen piece titled A Prospect Of Bridgetown In Barbados.
Among the articles Watson recommended was Houses, Inhabitants And Levies: Place For The Sephardic Jews Of Bridgetown, Barbados 1979 – 1729.
He said it was the first time anyone had attempted to do anything on the early Sephardic Jewish communities in the hemisphere. The professor indicated that an article on the dangerous lionfish, which have found their way into Barbadian waters, might be included in the next journal.
In commending the journal to the public, president of the society, Dr Trevor Carmichael,  said the contributors were an eclectic collection of writers and the product was visually appealing. (YB)
