KINGSTON, Jamaica – The People’s National Party (PNP) was heading back into government after five years in opposition, with preliminary results indicating that it has won 29 of the 47 seats so far declared in today ’s general election.
PNP spokesman DeLano Franklin told reporters that the PNP, led by Portia Simpson Miller had won the election and voters have “said enough of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP)”.
Simpson-Miller easily retained her St. Andrew South West seat.
JLP deputy leader Desmond McKenzie said that “it is not the end of the road for the JLP” adding that the figures indicate that the voter turnout has been 48 per cent.
“It is something we have to look at and see why we were not able to pull out our base,” he added.
Among the casualties of the election are former director of elections Danville Walker, who contested the elections on behalf of the JLP, as well as agriculture minister Robert Monteague and industry minister Clive Mullings. (CMC)
