LENGTHY DELAYS in the trials of accused drug traffickers are a major headache for police.
Head of the Royal Barbados Police Force’s Drug Unit, Senior Superintendent Grafton Phillips, told the DAILY NATION yesterday that in several cases people charged in connection with large drug seizures were eventually granted bail and went back to the illegal drug trafficking business.
“Our investigations pinpoint a number of people who were previously held for drug possession and were back in the drug business again. That’s one of our major problems in fighting the drug problem,” Phillips said.
The senior officer also expressed concern about the frequency of people being caught with drugs stashed in their stomachs. He said that because of the lack of adequate alert mechanisms at the island’s ports of entry, lawmen were always on the lookout for “swallowers”.
