Time to act

AS PREDIAL LARCENY CONTINUES to be a major problem in Barbados, one prominent supermarket chain operator says it is about time the Ministry of Agriculture enforces the Predial Larceny Act while a former head of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS) believes the police are not doing their job.
Their comments came after a St John farmer discovered that thieves had slaughtered his 1 700-pound bull, valued at more than $4 000, while it was out to pasture.
David Neilands, managing director of SuperCentre Limited, told the DAILY NATION that as far as he was concerned the creation of specific certificate of purchase books for farmers had been abandoned.
“As far as I understand it, it is under the Predial Larceny Act that these certificates be made available by the Ministry of Agriculture and they were just being held by the BAS. The point is, the law doesn’t seem to get anywhere in terms of the courts because it gets to a certain point and then it falls apart because the documents are not produced when they should be a part of the whole process,” Neilands complained.
