I desperately need help paying mortgage

Dear Christine,
I am at my wits’ end.
I have a mortgage to pay, electricity, water, and I must purchase food. I lost my job because I became ill and had to be hospitalized.
On my first day back at work, my boss told me I had been replaced due to my illness.
Officials at the NIS have told me that I do not have enough contributions for the period of time, so I am not entitled to unemployment benefits.
I have been home since February and I have used up all my money (I had a stroke after an operation).
My mortgage is two months in arrears and the financial institution is threatening to take the house. I rented for 26 years before I got this home. I cannot afford to lose it.
I am computer literate, can type, and I am desperately looking for a job, even if it is at a shop or small place that I can sell from.
Christine, I go without food some days and the electricity and water are in arrears.
I am desperate.

Dear Desperate,
You seem to be dealing with quite a number of issues at the same time.
You obviously need long-term help and, yes, a job is vital.
I would suggest in the meantime that you contact the Welfare Department Office in your area and see what assistance they can offer.
