Raul T. Garcia’s life is not in danger. His future, however, remains quite uncertain.
Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs Adriel Brathwaite told the MIDWEEK?NATION yesterday that he had personally checked on the affairs of the Cuban, who is detained at Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds, and Barbadians should not alarm themselves about his physical condition.
Garcia, who has been on a hunger strike at the country’s lone correctional facility for 22 days, has a heart condition and has lost more than 25 pounds in an effort to earn his freedom, either through deportation or release into Barbadian society.
“I made the decision to check Mr Garcia [Monday] and his life is not in danger,” Brathwaite said yesterday. “He is a bit dehydrated, obviously because he has been on a hunger strike, but we aren’t overly concerned about that.”
