A RECORD?number of youths – more than 1 200 – turned out for the annual Youth Development Community Sports Training Programme Rally organized by the Ministry of Family, Culture, Youth and Sport yesterday at the Deighton Griffith Secondary School in Christ Church.
Minister Stephen Lashley joined Director of Youth Cleviston Hunte in praising the rally’s role in heightening the interest of the various districts and schools in cricket, football, netball, tennis, athletics, basketball and volleyball.
This year, more than 1 400 youngsters participated in the 40-hour contact programme at more than 76 venues.
Lashley praised the hard work of his ministry, the National Sports Council and the community coaches in keeping the youth focused on positive activities which could pay tremendous dividends for the individuals as well as the communities and country.
After the formalities the youngsters and coaches needed no further  prompting to spill out onto the courts and fields to engage in play.
A number of primary schools sought to use the rally to hone their skills in the various disciplines, St Philip school Bayley’s standing out with teams taking part in cricket, football and netball. (KB)
