Lead by example, police told

A SENIOR POLICEMAN is cautioning his fellow officers against driving recklessly on the roads, saying they should lead by example.
“We owe a duty of care to the travelling public. When we are responding to calls for service in the line of duty, caution must be taken. The use of the lights and the siren must not be viewed as giving us, police officers, the right to go through red lights, the right to overtake improperly or the right to put other lives in danger,” said Assistant Superintendent Bruce Rowe.
Speaking yesterday at the closing ceremony for the Collision Investigation Course Level II, Rowe said fatal accidents continued to be a cause of concern to the Police Force.
He pointed out that there were 25 fatal accidents and 26 deaths in 2009, compared to 19 fatal accidents and fatalities in 2010 and 22 fatal accidents and fatalities last year. As such, Rowe said, road safety was a key factor in public health and injury prevention.
