Champion horse owner Sir David Seale wants night racing in order to save the pastime.
While savouring yet another Sandy Lane Gold Cup victory Saturday afternoon, Sir David told the DAILY?NATION that horse racing in Barbados remained “vibrant”.
However, he said, Barbados continues to “spin top in mud” by persisting with day-time horse racing.
“But our problem is that [we] cannot really make money racing on Saturdays. Exclude Gold Cup, exclude the Derby and exclude Boxing Day; [we] cannot get the crowd. [We] must go to evening racing,” insisted Sir David, also a horse breeder.
The president of the Barbados Turf Club described as “spinning top in mud”, the traditional of going to the Garrison Savannah on Saturdays for the noon start and trying to get in a reasonable number of races in the daylight hours available.
He said the Turf Club had applied for lights at The Garrison since 2009.
