Workers from four Government departments housed in the old National Insurance Service (NIS) Building on Fairchild Street, Bridgetown were off the job for most of yesterday.
Environmental issues affecting the Welfare, Land Tax, Data Processing departments and the Barbados Statistical Service (BSS) forced more than 100 workers off the job, with complaints ranging from concerns about the air quality to itching skin.
“We were having this problem over a period of time in the Welfare Department here on the fifth floor, but it started to get worse [last] Friday when staff started to complain about having itchy skin, headaches and losing their voices,” one officer told the DAILY NATION.
Another said: “Our senior officer in the department is now home on two weeks’ sick leave and the executive officer is out as well.”
