Hanna?Gill won Barbados’ third gold medal and the tally moved to 11 (three gold, three silver, five bronze) after the second day of the 2012 CARIFTA Swimming Championships in The Bahamas Friday night.
Gill won the 11-to-12 Girls’ 200-metre freestyle in 2 minutes, 17.99 seconds to add to the gold won by Zabrina Holder in the Girls’ 15-to-17 50 metres butterfly.
The silver medal went to Florence Rock, of Aruba, in 2:19.86, while Lesy Celini, of Guadeloupe, took bronze in 2:20.32. Tiffany Titus was fourth in 2:22.13.
None of the boys in the 11-to-12 age group made it to the final.
Kent Mullin was 19th overall in 2:33.35 and Jack Kirby was disqualified.
Sariyah Sherry won her second bronze medal and third medal overall in the Girls’ 13 to 14 200m freestyle in a time of 2:11.64, behind Trinidad’s Tyla Martin and Joanna Evans, of The Bahamas, in 2:09.73 and 2:11.33, respectively.
Kimberley Willoughby was sixth in 2:18.21.
Christian Selby won his second silver medal of the championships, finishing runner-up to Trinidad’s Jabari Baptiste in 1:59.68 in the boys’ race.
Baptiste clocked 1:59:15 while Matthias Marsau, of Guadeloupe, was third in 2:00.88 and Alex Sobers was ninth overall in 2:07.42.
The final medal of the night came from Amara Gibbs in the 15 to 17 Girls’ 400 individual medley (IM). She was third in 5:19.29, with the gold going to Lara Butler, of Cayman Islands, in 5:17.43 and silver to Danielle Van den Berg, of Aruba, in 5:18.17.
Holder finished in seventh place in the 200 freestyle in 2:14.42 and Lee-Ann Rose didn’t reach the final as Caroline Marinette, of Guadeloupe, took gold in 2:06.78.
Matthew Courtis was 15th overall among the boys in 2:05.38, with Trinidad’s Joshua Romany winning in 1:52.46, one of five boys to dip under two minutes.
Apart from Holder’s gold in the 50 metres fly, Barbados came up empty in that race.
Kendi Bynoe (35.59) and Gill (35.66) were down the line in the preliminaries. Damon St Prix (32.55) and Mullin (33.38) as well as Alexis Clarke (33.26) and Selby (28.98) also didn’t make it to their respective age group finals.
In the 100 metres backstroke, Titus was seventh and Reanna James 17th overall in 1:18.34 and 1:22.56, respectively; Kirby was fifth (1:12.11) and St Prix sixth (1:14.48); Sherry (1:14.86) and Clarke (1:15.70) didn’t make it out of the preliminaries; Gibbs was eighth in the final in 1:09:18 and Rose tenth in 1:11.04.
Titus was fourth in 5:51.03 in the 400IM. Selby was fifth in 5:09.73, three places ahead of Sobers (5:15.68) and Courtis was sixth in 4:48.14.
In the 400 metres medley relays, the 11-to-12 girls were sixth and the boys fourth, the same position as the girls in the 15-to-17 division.
Yesterday morning, preliminaries were also held in the 200 metres individual medley, 50 metres breast, 100 metres free and 200 metres fly. The finals were scheduled for last night.
