Crime not that bad, says PM

Burglaries and murders may have spiked recently, but overall Barbados remains the region’s leader in keeping a lid on crime.
That’s according to Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, who told Bajans in the Washington, DC area on Sunday afternoon that their birthplace had the lowest number of homicides in the Caribbean but apart from “crimes against property, in the context of the entire Caribbean, Barbados is doing best” in the fight against crime.
And Stuart based that assessment on written reports presented to him recently by Commissioner of Police Darwin Dottin.
But the crime “monster that has raised its ugly head” in Barbados and the rest of the region can be traced directly to some young people’s rapacious “demand” and “hunger” for stolen gold and copper, and that in turn has triggered somewhat of an upsurge in burglaries.
