Centenarian Sydney Goddard still enjoys a drink, as Acting Governor General Elliott Belgrave discovered yesterday when the former nightclub owner invited him to “fire one” in celebration of the milestone birthday.
With laughter Belgrave declined the invitation, jesting: “I can’t drink on the job. You want to get me fired?”
The Governor General did, however, share a glass of champagne with the Brighton Beach, St Michael resident who is now confined to a wheelchair but once operated the popular Zanzibar nightclub on Nelson Street.
