Those calls have been made by trade unionist Caswell Franklyn, head of the Unity Workers Union (UWU), against the background of Sir Roy’s controversial May Day speech in which he called Diamonds International boss Jacob Hassid an “Egyptian Jew” and claimed workers at his jewellery store had been sent home for attempting to join the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU).
Sir Roy’s comments immediately sparked a national debate, with a number of people, including Government ministers Donville Inniss and Richard Sealy, admonishing the veteran trade unionist for his remarks.
