Road limit

The General Insurance Association of Barbados (GIAB) wants a limit to the number of hours public service vehicles (PSVs) drivers are allowed behind the wheel daily.
And the 14-member group – which represents all general insurance companies in Barbados – wants such a regulation to be included in changes to the Road Traffic Act which are engaging Cabinet’s attention.
Chairman of the GIAB’s public relations committee, Anton Lovell, said after discussing the proposals which the SUNDAY SUN reported were submitted by the Ministry of Transport and Works and were under consideration, members gave thumbs up to the recommendations but believe they could go further.
Among the proposed regulations which the GIAB fully supports are: random drug and alcohol testing for PSV drivers, including Transport Board drivers; a minimum age requirement for all PSV drivers; mandatory semi-annual inspection of all PSVs; making PSV owners liable for the actions of their drivers; and prohibiting the use of cellphones while driving.
