Everything came together in one spectacular throw for Janeil Craigg who set a new junior national record in the javelin, the highlight of Sunday night’s action in the 2012 Barbados Olympians Classic at the National Stadium.
Craigg’s best throw of 71.58 metres was a significant improvement on Richard Rock’s 67.01 metres, set 12 years ago in Tampa,?Florida. It was the first time a junior had surpassed the 70-metre mark and was a mere 18 centimetres off the national record (71.76) set by Justin Cummins in 2008.
Eighteen-year-old Craigg, a Coleridge & Parry student and CARIFTA bronze medallist earlier this season, qualified for the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain, and also beat Cummins, who was second with 70.21 metres. CARIFTA silver medallist Nicoliai Bovelle was third with 65.20, and has another chance to qualify at the National Championships.
Craigg told MIDWEEK NATION he believed the record was within reach because coach Ramon Armstrong had already identified where he expected them to be this season.
