Sixteen-year-old Shonica Wharton’s fairy-tale year continues with her being chosen in the senior national netball team for the Americas Federation of Netball Associations (AFNA) Championships which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago from July 13 to 23.
Also set to get her first national cap is former Barbados Under-16 defender Shanice Rock.
Wharton, a goal shooter on the Garrison Secondary School’s Under-19 team, was part of the Barbados team which won the 2012 Caribbean Netball Association’s Jean Pierre Under-16 Competition. She was named top individual shooter for the second successive year and was also among the top 16 players.
A member of Church Village Netball Club, Wharton started playing at age eight in the St Philip competition and one year later was competing in the Barbados Netball Association (BNA) league.
