DENIS KELLMAN, Minister of Industry, Small Business and Rural Development, is calling for the reestablishment of a Barbados Development Bank (BDB).
His call came against the backdrop of a number of complaints by small and medium-sized business operators that they were being given a hard time in accessing funds from financial institutions and Government lending agencies.
Fresh from a World Bank conference in Jamaica, Kellman, who is also an entrepreneur, told BARBADOS BUSINESS AUTHORITY that the establishment of the development bank was “something I have spoken to Cabinet about” and has now taken it “outside of Barbados”.
“I felt it was a big error when the previous Government closed down the last development bank. The excuse given at that time was that the international institutions were not happy with it. I find that too often we allow people [from outside who] do [not] understand what is happening within the country to come and give us decisions,” he said.
