TIME HAS all but run out for Barbados’ senior athletes hoping to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games, with no new faces reaching the standards on the opening night of the 2012 National Track & Field Championships at the National Stadium.
While everyone was ecstatic that Greggmar Swift (13.52) had joined national champion Ryan Brathwaite and Shane Brathwaite with an “A” standard in the men’s 110 metres hurdles, hopefuls like Shakera Reece, Jade Bailey, Andrew Hinds and Kierre Beckles all came up short.
Ramon Gittens, who has a “B” qualifying time of 10.21 seconds, was crowned national champion in the men’s 100 metres “A” final, pulling away from Andrew Hinds to win in 10.32 seconds. Hinds was second in 10.36 and Akeem Forde made a return to competition with 10.60 seconds for third place, off the 10.18 standard.
Jermain Hinds won the men’s “B” final in 10.79 seconds from Mario Burke who clocked 10.81.
