JONATHAN CARTER returned to Sagicor UWI yesterday by scoring an enterprising century that lifted the runaway leaders to a massive first innings lead against Guardian General Barbados Youth.
UWI gained a lead of 213 after piling up 345 for six in reply to 132 on the second day of their fourth-round LIME Elite Division match.
Batting a second time, the youngsters offered more resistance, reaching 171 for two with in-form Craig St Hill hitting 93.
Barbados Youth still trail by 42 but UWI will fancy their chances of recording the fifth straight win today.
Carter’s century came from 68 balls and included nine fours and five sixes.
Captain Omar Phillips weighed in with 84 and Kevin McClean hit 41, allowing UWI to declare at tea.
At 170 for five, and after losing two quick wickets on that same score, both Carter and McClean pushed the score along.
The consolidation lifted the total with a 95-run seventh-wicket partnership.
This stand was broken by off-spinner Kemar Smith.
Phillips, starting the day on 45, and Nekoli Parris, on 46, carried the score to 140 with some strong batting just before Parris was caught by wicketkeeper Tevyn Walcott off fast bowler Akeem Jordan. Parris made 57 with six fours.
Meanwhile, Phillips continued his lusty hitting with nine fours and three sixes but when it looked on course for a century, he fell victim to leg-spinner Matthew Clarke, who also got the wicket of Chadwick Walton cheaply.
Walton was deceived and was forced into giving a catch to mid-on.
The in-form St Hill fell seven runs short of his second century. He stroked 14 fours and two sixes while Kemar Brathwaite remained unbeaten on 40.
