MINISTER?of Finance Chris Sinckler says Government is fully behind financing the University  of the West Indies (UWI) but will not back the hiring of part-time lecturers and tutors when other staffers can perform those duties.
Sinckler made this call Tuesday night winding up debate in the House of Assembly on a resolution for a Government guarantee  of a $41 million loan to the Cave Hill Campus from the National Insurance Scheme (NIS).
“There is a practice in this country, not just the university, including statutory boards, in which people keep hiring people to perform jobs that other people in the system should be doing,” Sinckler said.
“I am saying that a country that is seeking to do serious financial reform and restructuring cannot afford that luxury whether  it be at the Transport Board, [National?Housing Corporation]  or whether it be at the University  of the West Indies.
