Arthur: Call the elections

This was the immediate response from Opposition Leader Owen Arthur to news of the latest downgrade of the country’s investment rating by international rating agency Standard and Poor’s.
During a Press conference at the Opposition Office earlier this evening, Arthur also called on Central Bank Governor Dr Delisle Worrell to resign, saying the country has lost confidence in his financial advice.
With the country’s investment rating now downgraded to junk, Arthur said far reaching decisions had to be made about Barbados’ economic future within an atmosphere of calm and he appealed to Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to announce a date for elections.
‘This situation is serious,” he said in appealing for fresh elections.
He also accused the Governor of attempting to discredit a serious report that has been put in the international domain and of contending that the economy was stable when in fact it is not.
He charged that rather than being the “guardian of economic stability” the Central Bank was now “the source of our instability”.
He was supported by opposition members Mia Mottley and Clyde Mascoll.
