Any salary increase for public servants in Barbados would have a very detrimental effect on Government’s finances.
This comment came from Minister of Education Ronald Jones, who yesterday thanked unions for not “pressurizing Government” for a salary increase for public servants.
Jones was speaking during the opening ceremony of the inaugural Summer Institute put on by the Barbados Union of Teachers in conjunction with the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CFT) and the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development. The institute, which is being held at the Deighton Griffith Secondary School, is focusing on special education.
The minister said: “Any pressure whatsoever in relation to wages and salaries would have a very detrimental effect on the fiscal policy of Barbados and possibly would have an impact on your salaries . . . Once Barbados becomes downgraded, then hell will be unleashed.” (AH)
