If Barbados is to compete with sprints superpower Jamaica at the senior level, a national sporting policy must first be implemented.
And for this to happen, athletic coaches must stop working independently and work together towards one common objective.
That is the view of Vaman Harbin, manager of the successful team that took part in the 14th Biennial Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Athletics Championships last weekend in Jamaica, and won 17 gold medals, 17 silver and seven bronze, for a total of 41.
Speaking to WEEKENDSPORT in a telephone interview after the victorious team returned Sunday with their first CUT title in 16 years, Harbin said that at the Under-15 level, Barbados was just as good as Jamaica, if not better.
However, once athletes passed the Under-15 stage, and graduated to CARIFTA and the international level, there was a noticeable gap in the quality between the two territories.
